Opposing the abortion ban legislation (so-called "partial birth abortion" legislation)

Letter to the Editor 1

This week, anti-choice members of Congress passed legislation that will prevent women, in consultation with their families and doctors, from deciding the best and safest medical treatment.

The so-called Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 is unconstitutional because it contains no exception for cases in which a woman’s health is at risk and should therefore be struck down.   Planned Parenthood, the Supreme Court and the medical community agree that women and doctors — not politicians — should make serious medical decisions.

Letter to the Editor 2

The federal abortion ban that passed in Congress this week will outlaw medically necessary abortions needed by women who have serious medical conditions like kidney failure, diabetes and risk of stroke.

The Supreme Court has already ruled, in Stenberg v. Carhart, that women, in consultation with their families and doctors — not politicians — should make decisions about the best way to protect the health and life of a woman.

This politically driven, unconstitutional abortion ban should be struck down.

Letter to the Editor 3

The abortion ban legislation passed by Congress this week could put doctors in jail for providing the best possible health care to women. Furthermore, President Bush has promised abortion rights opponents he will sign this dangerous, unconstitutional legislation into law.

Jailing doctors for doing what’s best for their patients just to advance a political agenda is unconscionable.  Planned Parenthood, the Supreme Court and the medical community agree that women, in consultation with their families and doctors — not politicians — should make decisions about the best way to protect the health and the life of a woman.
