Fullbright Student Exchange in Norway!
Dear former, current, and future Fulbrighters to Norway!
I hope everyone is doing well. Oslo is enjoying an early spring, which (as
you may know) gives us Norwegians a much brighter outlook on life. Let's hope
this wonderful weather continues over Easter!
Attached please find the latest issue of the Alumni Newsletter. It is also
downloadable from our website, http://www.fulbright.no/Alumni_Association/.
I also wanted to direct your attention to an exciting new summer opportunity
at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) in Ås, just south
of Oslo. Please forward this to anyone who might be interested:
Summer University
Department of Academic Affairs
Welcome to the Summer University at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences
(UMB). At UMB’s Summer University you’ll get a quality experience at the frontier
of international agricultural and environmental education. Theme:
Current Challenges in the Management of Norwegian Natural Resources
Department of Academic Affairs
"Current Challenges in the Management of Norwegian Natural Resources": Lectures
and fieldwork will provide students with a broad insight into Norwegian biomes.
Special attention will be given to wilderness areas and high mountain flora
and fauna. Timeframe: 5-29 June 2007.
During the field excursion, we will visit Besseggen, where Peer (in Henrik
Ibsen’s play ”Peer Gynt”) claimed he rode the reindeer buck

Our Summer University aims to increase your knowledge through a stimulating
balance of classroom and field practice in thematic areas where Norway and
UMB have leading-edge competence. Courses are presented in an international
context.
When? June 5 – June 29 is the general timeframe. Some courses may start
earlier or later.
Admission to Summer University courses requires competency in English and
academic approval by your home university or college. Students may choose
only one summer course.
Academic credit is merited at 10 to 12 UMB study points, which is equivalent
to 10 to 12 ECTS. This, in turn, is often merited as 5 to 6 credit hours in
North America.
Social activities arranged by UMB include introductory and “graduation”
receptions as well as tours to sights in the vicinity and a tour to Oslo,
Norway’s capital. The campus itself offers myriad opportunities for outdoor
and indoor activities.
Accommodations and evening meals are provided as part of the course fee.
Campus dormitories consist of 6 bedrooms sharing a kitchen and bathroom. Regular
meals are served at the student union, “Samfunnet”.
Application procedures include completing and sending the application form.
This form must be accompanied by a copy of your passport and a transcript
of records from your university.
The application deadline is April 1.
Students will be notified of application results medio April.
Finances
Tuition is covered by the Norwegian government. If accepted, students will
be invoiced USD 1 700 (EUR 1 300) for: transportation from/to Oslo International
Airport (Gardermoen); accommodation and evening meals on campus; transportation,
accommodation and all meals connected to the fieldwork; assigned literature
and arranged social activities.
Students would cover airfare to and from Oslo International Airport (Gardermoen)
plus travel insurance. Students should also calculate USD 120 (EUR 100) per
week for additional meals and pocket money.

Precision Digital Geologic Mapping on the Maine Coast
Using Sea-Kayaks, GPS, Total Stations, Aerial Imagery, GIS & Traditional
Field Methods
May 26-July 21, 2007
An 8-week research internship position in precision digital outcrop surface
mapping,
structural analysis, geologic interpretation and database construction
and spatial analysis in GIS for junior-level undergraduates.
Program description
The summer NSF-REU Site program at the University of
Southern Maine is an opportunity for nine undergraduate students to learn
cutting-edge precision digital survey techniques as applied to geologic mapping
in coastal Maine while working on a research project for presentation at a
professional meeting. This program introduces students to the regional deformation
associated with Late Paleozoic Norumbega strike-slip shearing in the Northern
Appalachians, sea kayaking as a way to access island exposures, traditional
field methods and digital survey instrumentation for precision outcrop surface
mapping of geologic structures. Digital survey data and available aerial
imagery will be compiled for database construction and spatial analysis in
a geographic information system (GIS) to provide a basis for geologic interpretation,
structural analysis and tectonic modeling. Results are reported in
student abstracts and posters at the Northeast Section Geological Society
of America (NEGSA) meeting (spring 2008).
Students receive a stipend of $2400, travel reimbursement
and support to attend the NEGSA meeting to present their work and 6 credits
for their field experience (GEY360/GEO360 - Field Mapping in the Island
Environment: Data Collection to GIS). When not camping in the field,
dormitory accommodations are provided at the University of Southern Maine’s
Gorham Campus.

Monroe Township Internship in GIS
To Robert,
Hello, how are you? In addition to being Membership Coordinator for the NJ
AWRA, I have recently been elected the Board of Directors of The Coastal
Society. TCS is a group of highly motivated and dedicated managers, scientists,
professors, and other professionals as well as students focused on improving
the stewardship and management of the coastal zone.
The attached announcement describes an internship opportunity available to
recently graduated or current grad students with an interest in coastal/environmental
issues. The applicant must be a member of TCS, but it is a fabulous organization,
with great networking opportunities, a bi-yearly conference, a professional
journal, and more. Student membership is very reasonable and we are working
to create a "young professional" rate that will be available to new graduates.
This internship opportunity is a great partnership between NOAA and TCS and
really benefits the successful applicant professionally.
I hope that you will help us spread the word about this opportunity. If you
have additional questions, please contact me or visit the TCS website http://www.thecoastalsociety.org/
Thank you and Regards,
Tali
