Co-President: Prapti Shingala

E-Mail

Hello fellow AMSAers! My name is Prapti Shingala and I am the co-president for the 2008-2009 school year. I am SUPER excited about all the great plans we have in store this year. It's going to be an awesome year!

I am a senior majoring in Cell Biology and Neuroscience and minoring in Psychology. I love to travel, cook (huge fan of the Food Network), read, and watch television (I would be totally lost without my DVR box). After medical school, I would love to go into neurology/ neurosurgery. I think the nervous system is fascinating (I know...I am a big dork!). I also wish to volunteer with Doctors without Borders. I am very interested in global health and health policy. Besides AMSA, I am the Executive Manager of Campus Relations for the RUSA Allocations Board and the Co-Director of the Rutgers University Northeast Premedical Development Conference.

I have been involved in AMSA since I was a freshman here and it has been a totally worthwhile experience. AMSA is great for helping premedical students learn more about the medical school admissions process and making them more aware about issues in medicine today. I encourage all premedical students to join AMSA! Feel free to get in touch with me or any of the other amazing executive board members if you have any questions or need advice. It's never too early or too late to get involved!

Co-President: Joanne Ahn

E-Mail

Hi everyone! My name is Joanne Ahn and I am SO EXTREMELY excited about this upcoming year as your Co-President for AMSA! We have so many great things planned.

So... I am currently a senior at Rutgers College, majoring in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and minoring in French. Down the road, I want to become a pediatrician because I love kids and I love health! I do Undergraduate Research at Lipman Hall on Cook/Douglass, working with marine sponges and microorganisms. It's interesting and definitely something different. I also tutor children at Lord Stirling Elementary School at French Club and as an assistant teacher. I volunteer with the school RN once a week as well.

I love everything I do and appreciate and understand the value of hard work. But I also understand the value of play and relaxation! If you ever have any questions, need any advice, or anything at all, send me an e-mail or stop me if you ever run into me! I'd love to network with the pre-medical community at Rutgers and help each and every one of you become aware, passionate, and diligent physicians.

Treasurer: Amit Shah

E-Mail

Hey everyone! My name is Amit Shah, I am your treasurer for this upcoming year. I am a junior at Rutgers College, majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Public Health.

I currently do clinical headache research in the Emergency Department at Robert wood Johnson University Hospital, which is fun because you get to see and experience a lot of interesting things. Other than AMSA, I also am apart of Rutgers New Student Orientation and FIMRC.

I have always aspired to do something health related as a part of my career path. Although, I have not decided what kind of doctor I want to be, I know it is the profession for me. A little bit about myself, I am a HUGE New York Yankee fan and enjoy watching the Knicks (when they win). During my free time I like to hang out with friends and enjoy myself. I also like watching all different genres of movies including many foreign films. Although my duties as treasurer may seem confined to monetary and budget aspects, I plan to get involved in all facets of AMSA in making this the most productive and exciting organization at Rutgers!

Secretary: Rob Fox

Hey everyone!  My name is Rob Fox and I will be the Secretary for the Rutgers New Brunswick AMSA during the 2008-2009 academic school year.  First off, I am VERY pleased to be on the Executive Board and to also have the ability to express my interests in making your Rutgers AMSA experience all that it can be this year.  We have many fun and exciting events planned for you and I encourage all of you to become involved with one of the best clubs on campus.

A little about me…I’m a Senior and I’m majoring in English and minoring in Biology.  I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was 7 years old and that passion is still going strong and someday I hope to become an Anesthesiologist.  I went to Rutgers Camden for my first two years of college and I was on the AMSA E-board as a freshman, so I have a lot of experience with the club.  Also, I’m from South Jersey and I work in a hospital as a Physical Therapy Aide and I will be the first to say that being in the hospital environment is the best feeling in the world.  I’m also in a few clubs (both as general and E-board members) around campus and by that I try to make the most of my Rutgers experience.  I love bands from the early 90s, AKA the Grunge Era…Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and the Stone Temple Pilots, so you’ll probably hear me speak about them every so often.  I enjoy spending time with my family and friends back home, so if I have a chance to see them, I take it.  I also feel strongly about Healthcare and how it impacts a patient’s life.  After all, that is the basis for how much care most can receive in this country.

I know that for some of you it is difficult to see far down the road, but I’m confident with our help, you will be able to make the best decision for yourself.  My advice would be to take one thing at a time and enjoy life.  Classes can be difficult, but it is all worth it in the end.  I promise.  I’m pretty approachable, so if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send me an e-mail or speak with me in person.  Best of luck!

Comm. Service: Farah Hussain

E-Mail

My name is Farah Hussain and I will be the Community Service Chair for the Rutgers University Chapter of American Medical Student Association! I am entering my junior year with a major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience and Middle Eastern Studies.

When I'm not studying, I love to spend an evening reading a Jane Austen or a Victor Hugo novel and I often enjoy taking a couple hours to writing and sharing my work others. I'm also an avid supporter of the Italian Soccer Team and played the position as a goalie for nearly my entire life.

I hope to one day possibly work with children when I become a physician, and I truly aspire to have the work ethic and passion of doctors like, Dr. Sampson Davis and Dr. Atul Gawande. In addition to AMSA, I am involved with the university chapter of The Student Society for Stem Cell Research, where I hold the position of Secretary. This year, I really hope to get all of our AMSA members involved with various projects to enhance our organization's commitment to helping the New Brunswick campus and city. I want to streamline our projects with other clubs and really get everyone interested in and focused on important issues that affect health care today. Please e-mail me at farahh@eden.rutgers.edu, if for information on upcoming projects! :)

“Growing up in Jersey City, New Jersey, seasoned me for real-life experiences and as a result I was able to ‘sample’ many types of lifestyles without actually living them. Although both of my parents had their lives made through business, I, from an early age, was inclined toward something more than money, paperwork, and corporate deals. In high school I found my true calling in the world of the sciences. Making my way through moles, mitochondria, and vectors I found myself at Rutgers engaged in something more than academics; I saw that the world of science was my door to medicine and healthcare.

For the past three semesters, I have worked diligently to pursue my personal goals at Rutgers and in my community. As a commuter, I am able to keep up my responsibilities at Rutgers and take on an exciting venture as an EMT in my township. Today I am an active member of Rutgers American Medical Student Association with my eyes set on frontiers just beyond the horizon for both myself and AMSA. I hope to grow with AMSA and continue on to Medical School to fulfill my goals in becoming a Neurosurgeon.”

Blood, nervousness, tension, racing hearts, eager eyes, pressure of responsibility – I have always associated these feelings with the word “doctor.” From the time I can remember, I have always wanted to be a doctor because I love the challenges that go along with this profession. However, to be a doctor, I realized, I need more than just intelligence. I need a strong character, good ethics and most importantly, lots of compassion.

My name is Akanksha Karwar and I am a PR chair for AMSA this year. I am a sophomore at RU double majoring in Business Management and Biological Sciences. I’m involved with a lot of clubs at Rutgers like FIMRC, UNICEF, OXFAM, AIR and I love helping people out whenever I can. =)

I just want to welcome you to the club and with a common goal of becoming a doctor and serving humanity, I hope that this year you and I can enjoy everything that the amazing organization AMSA offers us! P.S - feel free to contact me with any questions.
