On Learning of the History of The Anthologist
Ian MacAllen, Fiction Editor, March 2003

The Anthologist is celebrating seventy-five years of serving the Rutgers literary community. Only now after four years, as I prepare to leave this institution do I comprehend the magnitude of the effect of this little journal. The Anthologist has been for many a source of stability, an outlet for creativity, and above all a group of friends.

After having browsed through our archived history, I can only hope the previous editors had as much fun as the editors of 2003. Robert Pinsky, the former Poet Laureate, labeled The Anthologist of his day a “lively and enterprising beatnik operation.” We can only aspire to the hedonism of that crowd.

Our continuing history is present in the hopes of inspiring new writers, preserving traditions of the past, and maintaining an active literary community at Rutgers University.
