Forty Miles From Philadelphia

Roy F. Barrows

Ten P.M.
below the falls
with the lights
of the pumping station
on the water.

You threw the first rock
for the splash--
mine was to be bigger.
The next hour
was to fill in river.

You can't fill in a river--
not and be in by twelve,
or touch the sky,
or walk to Philadelphia.
