Monday, June 11
the plot:
Monday, the conference started bright and early. My talk was actually on the first day. It went well, and I was glad to have it out of the way for the rest of the week!
One of the first things we noticed getting to and from the conference was that our end of town seems to be teeming with rabbits. Apparently the Old Course (one of the oldest golf courses in the world = St. Andrews main claim to fame) has a history of breeding rabbits on the ground, so everywhere we went we saw dozens of them.
For meals, the professors at the conference paid to stay in a dorm that provided their food. However, the graduate students were given free room and board in a university apartment complex further out. While we didn't have meals provided, we did have a kitchen for every five people, so almost every night of the conference, we went grocery shopping and made food together. It was nice to have hang out time with the other younger people at the conference.
After Monday's dinner, we walked into town and made it all the way to the St Andrews Cathedral ruins. Most of the ruins date back to the 12th century, although there is a square tower that dates back to the 10th century. Besides the Old Course, this is the main major sight of the town, and this was the first of several visits to it during the week.
