The Latino Student Council of New Jersey is an idea that has developed through the collaboration of the Latino Student Council here at Rutgers University and  propelled forward by LSC-Rutgers members involvement with Accion Juvenil Latina.  It is the belief of LSC-Rutgers that for there to be any serious change in the issues that affect our communities, WE MUST BE UNITED.  We have developed a structure for unified action that has been successfully implemented at Rutgers University, New Brunswick since its establishment in the winter of 1990.  Furthermore, we believe that before we can truly unite on a statewide level  you MUST be a united front on your own Institution.  Therefore, We the Latino Student Council  shall attempt to be the vehicle with which to push forward the mission of Accion Juvenil Latina for the advancement of the Latino Community.  We shall be hosting the Latino Summit during the Spring Semester of 2003, where we hope that Latino representatives from every University or College in the State come together to discuss the issues most important to the progression of OUR PEOPLE AS A WHOLE.  We will be presenting our structure with the hopes that organizations as well as individuals at respective campuses can come together in an efficient, highly structured manner.

Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey

Throughout all of our endeavours towards uniting groups throughout the Greater State of New Jersey, We shall have the full support of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey.  LLANJ is a coalition of Latino doctors, lawyers, teachers, business men and women, and politicians.  LLANJ is the most influential force that exists within the State as far as Latinos are concerned, but they are missing a critical student component.  If we all remember a little bit of history, most MAJOR social change has either stemmed or operated from a student base on the collegiate level.  Let us not forget the lesson of our forefathers.  It is up to US to develop OUR people and OUR youth along with ourselves.  NOBODY ELSE IS GOING TO DO IT!!  SO IT MUST BE YOU!!!

During the Conference for Dominican Affairs held in February 2002, Latino leaders from Colleges all over New Jersey met for the first time.  Through a discussion led by Cid Wilson ( Dominican American National Roundtable ), the group addressed the issues affecting Latinos at all levels of education throughout New Jersey.  The delegates created an email list server to continue communication with the hopes of eventually meeting again to figure out solutions to the problems talked about.  The group waned for a few months until two members met again at the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey conference and decided to continue the hopes of AJL.  The culmination of months of hard work came together when AJL had its first official planning meeting on Saturday October 5, 2002.

The attendees of this meeting discussed the prior issues and developed the following three major points that will eventually              be the mission statement:

  • Create and implement a state wide high school tutoring and mentoring program
  • Establish a state wide council of Latino Organizations on the collegiate level
  • Create and implement a community based parent education program
