Joey P.Your letter to David Hasselhoff was amazing and I am very impressed with all that you have achieved in your life, Paul. What you do for these children as well as adults is unbelievable and you should continue sharing your stories with as many people as possible, for just reading your contribution to Making Waves has given me chills.

Thank you for sharing this with me and I hope all of your dreams come true.

Binti T.It must have taken a lot of courage for you to share all this with the world. Your letter to David gave me fresh insights on, and a new perspective of, my own life.

Keep spreading the word and love, Paul. You really can make a difference.

Anthony C.What an uplifting and inspirational account! It's no surprise that Mr. Hasselhoff has chosen it to make the final cut of his memoirs, Making Waves. It's only a matter of time before the right person happens upon your story and makes a movie out of it for the big screen, extending your motivational reach as far as the mind can imagine into the lives of many people in need of enriching and enlivening.

Keep strong brother, you represent the fight in all of us.

David HasselhoffHey Paul,

It's people like you who TRULY keep people like me going. Thanks for your letter, thanks for your courage, thanks for allowing me to use it in my book!

From my 1980's television show Knight Rider, ONE MAN CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, AND YOU ARE THAT MAN!

     With respect and admiration,
     David Hasselhoff

Peter ThompsonCongratulations on your speaking engagement in the Power of One series on the U.S.S Intrepid - what an honor to be included among the speakers and the reaction from the high school kids makes it all so worthwhile.

In answer to your question, your letter was chosen for publication in Making Waves because it embodies the spirit of the Knight Rider slogan in a very powerful and evocative way. We are printing it in its entirety at the end of the text as an inspiration to others.

I checked out your website and you're right about your car - it's a very cool interpretation of the 7-Series BMW! The family photos are also great - there's a very striking resemblance among all three brothers. Keep up the good work! Meanwhile, I'll forward your suggestion about possible school visits in California to David.

     Best wishes,
     Peter Thompson

Richard W.Your message of positivity is what this world really needs to hear! At first, when I heard that you wrote a letter to David Hasselhoff, I was going to laugh at the experience, but that was shortsightedness on my behalf. I realize that everything has a different effect on everyone, and it is often surprising the things that touch our hearts and minds.

Although you may have a physical disability, so many of us walk around with mental disabilities! While you have decided to take action in your own life and accomplish things that I'm sure doctors said you never would be able to do, so many of us are blind to our disabilities -- even if there is a will to change our lives we can't see where we need work. Having a positive attitude is a beautiful thing in life and you can make many people feel great when they interact with you and even after that, but another true challenge would be to help people reflect on their own lives, see why they lack that positive attitude, recognize what they have in life, see what they can give back to people, and try to find a purpose in their own lives.

Your message is the catalyst that starts many people on that path, and while David's message in Knight Rider is what caused your personal revelation, your message has induced the very same revelations in many others.

Thank you for sharing your letter with me and thank you for being a person that cares so much about others even when it may seem like other people may not deserve it. You're a great guy Paul!

I read your letter to David and I've got to tell you that was an absolutely fantastic letter! It was written brilliantly and I think it's the best letter I ever read in my life. I am not at all surprised that David wants to include this letter in his memoirs!

Though "Knight Rider" was never considered to be on the level of "Star Trek," for example, for David to read how the show inspired you must be pretty delightful! Your personal story elevates "Knight Rider" to a much higher level -- from just another fantasy-action show to something so powerful that it can change someone's life, transforming it into an inspirational show that can propel a viewer into achieving the seemingly impossible in the real world. This is in much the same way that the prototype car, KITT, was able to propel Michael Knight at impossible speeds, fast enough to be able to reach his goals of placing justice in the face of great evils, in the fantasy world!

You surely have sent him the compliment of a lifetime and I doubt he has ever received such a letter regarding Knight Rider from a fan.

Michael W.Hey Paul, your letter was awesome and inspirational. It's great that you realize this talent that you have and more importantly, that you use it. You truly have a gift for reaching people and opening their eyes in a way that they've never imagined before. I'm one of those many people you've touched and definitely won't be the last.

Great work, Paul! I'm proud of you.

The next step you ought to consider taking is writing a book. Your words really do reach out to people and not only provide hope but amaze as well. Keep making waves of your own!

Laura S.I just read your letter and it was such an inspiration, to actually know you - the person that could write words that touch every person who reads them. I'm sure you know this, but you leave a lasting impression on every person that you meet, including me!

David A.Paul, we're both very inspired by you and we hope for the best in your mission to help reach out to those who need a role model.

It's amazing how you're able to reach out to celebrities with your honest demeanor, especially with Knight Rider. I would have never taken his message, "One man can make a difference," to heart had it not been for your interpretation of the quote. The way you put life's lessons into a more realistic and positive perspective gives me hope in trying to follow a message instead of how it was done, such as Knight Rider.

The world needs to at least take a glimpse of your vision. Your letter to David should eventually contribute to your own memoirs in the future. Because I'll definitely be in line for you to autograph my copy of your life in paperback!

Steve S.I believe everyone is meant to contribute something in life in one way or another. By being born with cerebral palsy, you were given a challenge. The perceptions from others also offered you an additional challenge.

You have worked especially hard to triumph over your disability and show everyone what you are made of. You have inspired many people in life through your everyday actions and motivational assemblies to be the best they can be. I really liked how you describe the ups and downs and how life is a fantastic dream.

It means a lot being your Hero when, in fact, YOU are already a hero to me and to many other people around you! You bet I look forward to lifeguarding with you each summer at the Jersey shore!

Robert C.You have motivated many people, met famous celebrities, and touched the hearts of many including me! Now how are we to respond to such touching remarks when you catch us all speechless?

Simple. The same way people express emotions without using their voice, including hugs and handshakes. It is in that pat on the back or that hug from a smiling individual that comes the realization that you have touched a heart. In doing so, it makes sense that the only way to repay you is by "showing," not telling, because actions truly do speak louder than words.

Paul, in your case, BOTH your actions, and your words are heard so loud I still have a ringing in my ears!

Jessica T.Paul, you are such an inspiration to everyone you meet, and the inclusion of this letter in David's memoirs is just further proof of this! Thank you for helping all of us to have a positive outlook and to "keep on, keepin' on" even when the going gets tough.

I'll be picking up a copy of David's book when it comes out in the States, and I hope I can wrestle you away from your busy schedule to get your autograph! ::grin::

Ryan M.Hey Paul! Your life sounds so exciting! That's pretty unique that you have an agent -- not too many people can say that about themselves.

I told my parents about your magazine with that great photo of you with Billy Joel, and of course, your letter to David Hasselhoff! Your letter touched my heart and I can see why he would like to include it in his book.

I think I may actually have been in your audience when you visited my middle school seven years ago! I'm sure you have done plently of assemblies around our hometown too. That's also a wild story about your keynote at JFK Airport, you must feel important for being able to motivate U.S. Customs officials at two of the busiest airports in the nation!

Michael H.Paul, you have worked really hard to create the life you've always wanted from a place where many people easily give up and end up feeling sorry for themselves (many people do this without a disability!). You live as an example for others that there is so much more to life than most people even dare to dream of! So many people lose sight of their dreams and do what works in the moment, eventually settling for a life that makes them unhappy.

Your assemblies are a powerful counter-strike against that whole concept, and it's really inspiring to see that there are people out there looking (and succeeding!) to make a difference in that area of the world!

Brent D.I have just finished reading your letter for the third time. And I really enjoyed it. It's great to know that there are people in this world, like you, who care so much for others and have such positive, upbeat attitudes towards life.

Your words have also made me feel motivated to succeed. I felt like I could take on the world. Life may throw us some curve balls but we always have control of the bat, Paul. We make the decisions in life and we choose whether or not to swing. Life is what we make of it and a positive attitude can go a long way. It's the key to happiness and success. A sense of humor doesn't hurt either, and I know you have got plenty of that!

In front of me is a true success story and I think that your personality will keep you going for a long, long time ... kind of like the energizer bunny!

BassemHey Paul! I really enjoyed it when you came to my school! I was so intrigued by your assembly and videos, and the Q&A session. I'm still smiling like you said!

Please return to my school again, because you will always be my Hero. YOU ROCK! I'm sure we will keep in touch.

AmberPaul, you are definitely one of my heroes! You are just so funny and so happy; that's awesome!

Please don't change any part of your assembly (it's perfect)! I love how you went skydiving and scuba diving. It was insightful to know that, years ago, your dad pushed you to make you stronger.

Please come back to our school again. I believe that yours was the best program we've had!

JackieYou are an incredible writer and a motivation to everyone, Paul! Your stories really are touching and your passion for helping people realize they can reach their goals is so unique.

You are a genuine person and you have touched a lot of people emotionally at Rutgers. Although I have not spent that much time with you, I want you to know that you have inspired me as well!

Diana D.Hey Paul, I just read your letter to David Hasselhoff. I thought it was excellent! You are truly inspirational!

"...your challenges are not supposed to paralyze you; they are supposed to help you discover that all life is yours - to conquer, to love, to live." I loved that quote!

I had noooo idea that the St. Joseph's Cathedral was in Montreal! That's simply amazing! My dad lived in Montreal for 3 years of his life. And before my parents had children...living in Montreal and opening up a deli was actually an option! How interesting that would've been!?!

I also enjoyed reading the paragraph about the good times and bad times and how you related it to the sun rising and setting. I love analogies like that!

Linda P.I don't have the proper words to describe how beautifully written your letter to David was. You are articulate, you are passionate, and your words were heartfelt and honest.

I commend you for being able to get all your feelings down on paper, and now, printed into a published book! You should be proud of yourself and the way you've taken charge of your life and strived for your goals. I never realized the severity of the hardships that you've faced, and the difference you have made in children's lives is admirable.

Thank you for sharing this letter with me, Paul. I really appreciate you opening up this way and letting me into your world!

Casey C.I really think that you had to have had a lot of courage to speak to us. I really liked the presentation that you gave and it even brought tears to my eyes because I don't know what I would do if that happened to me.

I hope that you do accomplish more of your dreams in the long run, Paul! You deserve all the world and then some for what you have done.

Jackie S.I actually remember sitting in my high-school gymnasium, listening to your story. At the time, I kind of just tuned you out trying to fit in with my friends and going along with them saying how dumb the presentation was.

However, all these years later, I have to say thank you. I recently was having a rough time in school, with friends and at home. Just reading your letters, and the comments that people wrote, made me think back to that day in high school when you walked into our gymnasium with your huge smile! Reading your words of encouragement helped me. So thank you for the motivation, Paul. Continue to reach out and touch people's hearts, like you've impacted mine.

KelseyHey Paul! I absolutely loved your assembly! It was so heartwarming, and it's so cool to see someone that takes time out of their lives to show people what it's like to have a disability.

It's awesome that you look on the bright side of everything AND I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT YOU JUMPED OUT OF THAT PLANE! That remains one of the things that i really want to do in life haha!

I talked to my younger sister about you and, on Friday, I'm going to go into their school to suggest your presentation. So maybe you'll be visiting our school district again! That would be cool!

Holly C.I had the chance to read your letter to David that is published in his memoirs. More people need to have the same positive outlook and drive in this world.

I actually plan on sharing this letter, as well as the one from the middle school student, with my younger sisters as they are still at an impressionable age. Even though they have not been able to see you speak, I hope that reading this will move and inspire them the way it has done to me.

BeckyHey Paul! To tell you the truth, I was at the Elks Leadership Conference in New Brunswick earlier this year for peer leadership, and I listened to your touching assembly twice there. So seeing you on stage at my high school was what my friends and I really wanted. All I kept hearing after you left last week was, "He is something special! He really like motivated me ..." and that was so amazing!

Thank you so much for coming to my school and sharing your love and story with us! Stay healthy and keep on accomplishing all your dreams.

By the way, tell Billy Joel I said hi!

Patrick M.I have read your letter and I'm very inspired by you. You actually became a role model when you were very young! Visiting many schools at such a young age must have been a very nervous speaking time for you. I know that when I was ten years old, it was even tough for me to speak in front of my family (let alone an entire school!).

I am very inspired by your interpretation that “one man can make a difference.” I’ve never seen the show Knight Rider, because I wasn’t even born at the time. I believe that one man can make a difference -- it may not be a big difference, but something so small as to put a smile on someone’s face. I have done that and would like to do more of it.

Even in today’s world, you still have the brightest and most positive attitude I have seen. Today’s society feeds teenagers with negative messages especially through music. Songs on the radio for example talk about breaking up with a lover, degrading women, and just being angry at the world. Personally I don’t understand it, but living in the generation I grew up in, I’m sure I have some negative songs on my mp3 player.

Words are the most powerful weapon in the world, stronger than any metal including steel. They affect everyone and through speaking, I believe you do the same. Your words are powerful and simple. “One man can make a difference.” I am very glad to have run into you, and would certainly like to say more, but I have difficulty expressing my feelings for you in words.

Thanks for being my hero!

JeraldHey Paul! Your speech was more than inspiring. Not only did it change my outlook on the world around me, but it has also changed how I view myself. Although skydiving is not on the agenda of my life, I still feel that I can accomplish more than I have thought before. Like your dream to walk and to become a meteorologist, my dream is to become a famous musician which I thought was a big undertaking, until I heard your speech.

Paul, you are a lifetime hero. If I ever do become a famous musician, I will be sure to recognize you as a hero!

I hope you will come back soon to inspire more children, and teach them to take dis out of disability.

EmmaHey Paul! You are my hero because you have so much courage to keep believing in yourself and in others. You always want to make people smile, which is kinda like me! haha

You are also so motivating and you gave me courage to stand up for what is right. Thank you so much for coming to our school -- you really help make a difference! You don't just talk about your disability, but you inspire young minds, bring awareness of those who are different, and give hope to others.

KaterinaYour assembly was so heartfelt! You made me and all my friends smile and laugh. It inspired me and I came home that day and told my parents about the assembly and it also made them smile! I also told my friend about your car and your hearing aid! It was funny because now she wants one so she doesn't have to listen to her brother.

You inspired me with the fact that you are disabled; however, you still go on living like nothing is really wrong. Since you went skydiving, you showed us how much fun it could be even though I am, like you, terrified of heights. You are one of my heroes, Paul!

Thank you for coming to my school and making me smile!

MelanieHey Paul! The stories in your assembly at my school are indeed unforgettable. My favorite was the soccer story where you were the goalie. That's amazing!

In the past, I have read motivational stories that are similar to yours. Since you visited my school, I got to see you in person and you shared real experiences (not something I read in a book)! I now know that anything is possible.

Every word I heard that came tumbling out of your mouth processed through my whole body and gave me the chills. Your speech was awesome and amazing, and it's something I'll never forget. You showed me that you can do so many things in one lifetime, no matter who you are ... because everyone is a somebody.

Paul, you made me realize that I am someone, and not no one. Your stories have inspired me to live my life and have the feeling of living my "dream."

OmarHey Paul! I really admire your courage, your aspirations, and your strong desire to achieve. Your letter to David Hasselhoff was very inspirational and it has broadened the ways I think about people and myself.

What you do is truly a gift. You motivated me with your passion to help others feel good about themselves. Keep doing what you are doing because you are honestly making a difference!

HollyHey Paul! Your assembly was truly amazing! I was inspired because you made me smile, laugh, feel sad, and think about life's challenges in ways that I've never even considered. You have changed my outlook on life. I try to think about the good things that come from my experiences, ignore the bad, and now my little problems mean nothing to me!

I love how you can have the amazing life that you have in your position. For example, you learned to walk, skydive, paint, sing (haha), play the piano (haha), and even win a trophy playing soccer (HAHA)!!

You are such a wonderful, talented guy! I will definitely look up to you, and I also want to be like you when I get older! I'm sure you are also a role model to many other students.

KeithPaul, you are amazing! That is the only way I can sum up how quickly you have made me laugh and feel so inspired. Your stories are fantastic and loaded with such insight, passion, and humor!

You are one of the most unique and truly amazing new friends I have ever made. I brag about you constantly to my other friends and family, and can't wait until you get to meet them all. Anytime, seriously anytime, you want to get together again, and grab some food, or just hang out as friends you let me know.

By the way, your writing is impeccable. I can't remember last time I wrote so much without having to do it for school! See how you yet again inspire.

I need to add that your unique BMW is just too amazing! You seriously have a (pimp) ride.

ToniPAUL! I am going skydiving. Before you came to our school, I always thought about doing it, but I definitely am now! Your video changed my mind! Haha

You are an inspiration to all of us! I didn't realize the significance of people who have disablities. I find it truly amazing how they can have one and not feel sorry for themselves and still try to be the best they can be. You have come so far and didn't even let cerebral palsy stop you. I think everyone should look up to you!

You're a role model and my new best friend.

About me:

My name is Paul. I enjoy visiting schools and colleges to host motivational programs and keynotes. During these assemblies, I share the positive perspectives and the realities of growing up with cerebral palsy, and those experiences that have helped me realize my dream of walking. The experiences are funny and insightful, and in no way depressing, and help to emphasize that one's capabilities should always overshadow their disabilities. This is precisely the reason why I continue to be inspired by Billy Joel's song, Just The Way You Are. My interpretation of this song is that each of us has the potential to promote love and understanding within our own communities, and we should always be encouraged to share our best with others. I have been speaking at schools since I was ten years old, and so many heroes have guided me in my fantastic dream called "life."

"One man can make a difference." I've always believed that.

The quote I described above is precisely the Knight Rider slogan. Earlier last year, I wrote a heartfelt thank-you letter to actor David Hasselhoff, who starred in the Knight Rider television series in the 1980s. In my letter, I explained how the theme of Knight Rider made me understand (at an early age) that each of us can be heroes - in other words, ordinary people who triumph over extraordinary circumstances - like our favorite television characters did each week. David actually responded to my letter in a way I never would have imagined!

David asked me if he can include my full letter -- unedited -- at the end of his memoirs, titled Making Waves! (The book cover is pictured above!) Making Waves is presently on store shelves in Great Britain and Europe, and will be on U.S. store shelves on May 15th, 2007 (perhaps under the title, "Don't Hassel the Hoff!")

My Own Definition of a Champion
When we allow our imagination and our realistic possibilities to soar, we can confidently leap over some of the most overwhelming hurdles that life throws at us.

Paul Stuart's Facebook profile

Who I'd like to meet:

Billy JoelBilly Joel

I was fortunate to be given an opportunity to have a conversation with "Piano Man" Billy Joel. Billy was then hosting a college lecture class, and a magical Q&A session, at the University of Delaware. The date was April 11th, 1996.

The fantastic "dream" started when I left my job early and drove north to the University of Delaware campus, arriving about mid-afternoon. Knowing that there would be 2,000 fans in the audience, and Billy would be hand-picking some of them to ask him a question about his music, I wanted Billy to call on me (and I had NO idea I was about to meet him). So, when getting dressed that same morning, I prepared for this by choosing the brightest, boldest shirt in my wardrobe (so Billy would notice me in the audience). The shirt was, of course, the full American flag ... the colors and design are so bold that I am nearly impossible to miss, so I thought it was an excellent choice.

I had a late lunch at The Ground Round by myself, before meeting my sister Suzanne who was going with me to see Billy. When I finished my lunch, I drove to the nearby stadium and was standing outside its locked front doors, waiting for my sister. When she finally got out of work and met me there an hour later, she insisted to me, "Paul, I know you love talking to other people, but PLEEEEASE don't embarrass me when I am with you! I don't want you talking to anyone here, because I'll leave if you do!!" She gave me an ultimatum, but was I going to abide by her set of rules? "No way!" I thought. No way!!!

When the stadium doors were finally opened, Suzanne and I went inside to take our assigned seats. Fifth row on the ground floor, aisle seats ... not bad at all, a perfect view! This is gonna be an awesome show! I wanted so badly to start chatting with the fans gathering around me, but as long as I had my sister sitting next to me, I was very limited. haha She soon tells me, "I didn't have lunch today and I am hungry. I'm going to see what they are selling outside. Want anything to eat?" I responded that I already had lunch at The Ground Round so I wasn't hungry. She then asked me, "Can I borrow $10 to get something to eat?"

You need to understand that I usually don't lend my sister money, because historically, she never pays me back! However, in this case, I was willing to get rid of her for only a few minutes, so I took out my wallet and gave her $10. She then goes out of sight and I jumped at the chance to speak with a reporter standing up front, near the stage, next to a cameraman holding a huge portable television camera!

I walked up to the reporter and introduced myself. I also explained to her my love of Billy's music and especially the song, Just The Way You Are, because there is so much love and tolerance implied by the lyrics. In our conversation, I also mentioned that I enjoy hosting assemblies for students in order to promote understanding of people with disabilities, and it was my dream to meet Billy and thank him for the inspiration. After several minutes, our conversation was interrupted when I saw my sister enter the stadium, apparently returning to her seat. I quickly thanked the reporter and zoomed back to my seat, hoping my sister wouldn't notice! My sis had no idea what I was doing when she was gone. lol

People continued to shuffle into the stadium entrance, and the room was getting more and more packed with Billy Joel fans. After ten minutes, as my sister was finishing her sandwich, the same reporter tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Paul, come with me." My sister was sitting next to me at the moment and questioned me, "Who is she? I never saw her before." I responded, "Stay right here, Sue, I'll be back in a few minutes." I just did not have any honest idea where the reporter could be taking me. Before I left, I grabbed the Rutgers University magazine I had with me, because there was a nice photo of me in this magazine issue noting that I had earned an statewide award representing Rutgers.

The reporter escorted me backstage and I was startled when she turned to me and said, "Hold on, I'll see if Billy has a few minutes to talk with you." She entered a room and I waited outside for a few moments, then she opened the door and finally said, "Come inside, Paul!" The reporter actually left the room and closed the door behind her, leaving me the only person in the room with the actual Piano Man smiling! He walked over to where I was standing, but I'm still speechless and astounded. Nevertheless, Billy had a warm friendly smile on his face.

"How are you, Paul?" HE KNOWS MY NAME! At the moment, I tried to speak, but nothing intelligible even came out! I had a huge smile on my face, but was definitely at a loss of words. I was also so nervous that I said, "I .... I .... I .... am" when I realized I couldn't even complete a full sentence! "He must think I'm an IDIOT!" I thought. Billy patted me on the back, calmly reassured me in a friendly voice, and warmly shook my hand. "Paul, it's really an honor for me to meet you, and to be inspired by you. Come sit down on the couch and we'll talk," as he pointed towards one of two couches. Billy sat on the other couch, listening intently.

We were having an interesting conversation lasting about ten minutes, and was stunned when Billy mentioned that he personally read all the letters I had written to him at his office over the years! I soon realized that he needed to get ready for the show. Since I had my Rutgers Magazine with me, I opened up to the page with my photograph and then handed the opened magazine to Billy. I remarked, "Billy, since we have had this conversation, and you have read the letters I sent you, would you kindly autograph this magazine for me?" Without hesitation, Billy takes out a new black Sharpie, and writes on the same page around my photo, in big letters, "Dear Paul, Cheers! Billy Joel." He wished me all the best at Rutgers and then escorts me to the door. "Enjoy the show, Paul!"

I'm now virtually a walking zombie! I'm back outside the dressing room, where I find myself mingling with all of the top administrators of the University of Delaware. I befriended a nice man whom I later learned was the official photographer for the college magazine! The administrators were all apparently waiting to get a photo-op with Billy Joel, and I got some of their official business cards. I ask the photographer if he could take a few pictures of me with Billy, as I needed some way to capture a fantastic moment in time. "Sure! I'll be happy to!" The photographer ended up taking photos of all the administrators posing with Billy, and then Billy comes over and stands next to me for a few photos!

I finally walked out to the stadium area, like I said, resembling a walking zombie! Realizing that the stadium was now filled to capacity and the show was about to start, I quickly took my seat in the fifth row, only to be questioned by my sister, "Paul, where the hell were you?" As I turned to face her, I had the widest smile you had ever seen, but I was still very much speechless. Instead, I grasped the magazine I was carrying, opened to the Billy autograph around my photo, and she gasped -- it was quite obvious where I was!

Several fans around us craned their necks to see the autograph. I heard them ask my sister, "How does your brother DO that?"

After all these years, I am still asking myself that same question!

Two weeks go by, and the photos arrive in the mail. I definitely wanted to place an extra smile on Billy's face! Since I had several 8x10" copies of our photo, I autographed one of them and sent it to Billy for his own collection. It's amazing that Billy chose to frame our photo (with my autograph) and hang it in the den of his Manhattan apartment, where it has been for years! What a generous gesture, Billy!
Suzanne complained that I didn't take her backstage. I promised her that the next concert would be an extra special experience for both of us, and it occurred a few years later! [Read on]

Sir Elton John

I had tickets for me and my sister to the 2002 Face to Face concert at the First Union Center in Philadelphia. Ironically, I was one of the first concertgoers to arrive at the stadium at 2:00pm for an 8:00pm show. (The parking lot was virtually empty then, and I was amazed to find that parking was free at so early a time!) The first stadium door I approached was then unlocked (for stadium employees who smoke), so I went inside to an empty stadium, watched the guys set up the stage from one of the front row seats, and was soon approached by whom I later learned to be Billy Joel's tour manager! I opened the magazine I had with me, and the manager was amazed to find a photo of Billy and me accompanying an article about my motivational programs at schools. He said, "I'll be back in a minute, stay here" and returned with two complimentary backstage passes!

Later that evening, Suzanne and I were taken backstage to mingle with some of Billy's band members before the show. Mark Rivera, Billy's longtime sax player, is far on the other side of the room talking to fans. When our eyes connect for about two seconds, Mark had an immediate expression of generosity on his face (I could tell). He excuses himself to come over and talk with me and my sister. Mark then escorts us the two of us out of the room and spends a half-hour with us walking around the arena, apparently impressed with our devotion to students' lives. I later e-mailed him a thank-you note for his inspiration and patience!

Before we parted ways, Mark introduced us to another Billy band member, Crystal Taliefaro, who was delighted that my sister was a school guidance counselor (like Crystal's brother was)! They were chatting so amicably for ten minutes, so I stood quietly aside and beamed! Crystal was so friendly and amicable that it was truly a delight to meet her and bask in her generosity and warmth. We were backstage during all this time, and Billy Joel then greets the two of us just before the show. Billy introduces us to Elton John, who smiles broadly during our conversation, knowing that I enjoy motivating children, and hugs both of us! We then pose for a picture, and a staff member of the First Union Center prints out the photo in the stadium offices upstairs and brings us the printed photo that night!

I think my sister really enjoyed every moment of the birthday gift I got for her that evening (the concert tickets)! I hope I'm a good brother! :)

Christopher Reeve

During a VIP reception prior to Mr. Reeve's evening program at the East Brunswick Hilton, I was standing in a large circle with a group of important CEOs and hospital vice-presidents, including the CEO of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Everyone in the group was sharing their own stories about how Mr. Reeve personally inspired them. I offered to be the last person to share my own story, since these were more powerful people than I was!

I shared that "I was captivated by the first Superman movie in theaters in 1978. As a 5-year-old, Superman was the first fictional character to tell me that my dreams had wings of their own. I wanted to learn to walk!" As I was ending that sentence, and unknown to me, Mr. Reeve wheeled himself into the room behind me and stopped right besides me, smiling broadly at my comment! I was startled that my hero was right next to me, because I inadvertently "introduced" Christopher Reeve to all the members of my VIP group standing in a circle!

Vendela Kirsebom

Following my motivational program at the United Nations celebrating their Special Session on Children, I noticed a UNICEF event held across the street from the United Nations building. The curious side of me wandered over there, and I proudly showed some UNICEF organizers standing behind a roped-off area the U.N. certificate I was just awarded. They were apparently impressed, so they lifted the ropes and I was invited to attend this event along with my agent (Jay), and two fellow motivational speakers (Jim and Scott)!

After the unveiling of a statue in honor of Audrey Hepburn's lifetime contribution to UNICEF, Norwegian supermodel Vendela Kirsebom took notice of me standing there admiring the statue. I couldn't help but notice her sequoined gown and beautiful personality. We engaged in a delightful conversation and I learned that she is not only a supermodel, but also an actress (in the Batman movie) and UNICEF ambassador. She was impressed by the motivational assemblies that I present to students!

I was so engrossed in my conversation with her that I missed the chance to meet U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (standing behind me)!

Roger MooreSir Roger Moore

Supermodel Vendela was not the only celebrity I met at the UNICEF gala that night! Roger Moore, the former James Bond 007 of the 1970s, was also a guest of honor at the event. I shared a delightful conversation with Sir Roger and his gorgeous wife, Lady Moore. (He was surrounded by other beautiful women, which should be expected when you meet James Bond!) lol

My conversation with Sir Roger centered on both of our contributions to children's causes, because the only hope for a brighter future for our nation lies in our children. Sir Roger told me that, unfortunately, "... a hero, in general, is often depicted with a gun in his hand." While he does not regret the violence depicted in the James Bond films, he agrees that the situations should never be imitated in real life. I was impressed with his inspirational attitude and outlook! Like Vendela, he is also an ambitious UNICEF ambassador.

Tom Cruise

It's definitely interesting how I got in touch with Tom Cruise. Tom's sister, Cassie, used to have a restaurant in downtown Freehold, adjacent to my hometown. She waited on my table on those times I walked across the street from my Freehold office to eat there for lunch! I remarked that she looks like her brother, which is actually the same compliment she bestowed on me! haha

I have a good friend, Rich Wenner, and since his birthday was approaching in a few weeks, I wanted to get him something special. I knew he liked the movie, "Rainman," so I went over to the video store and purchased a VHS copy (This was the early 1990s -- DVDs were not yet sold in stores!). I brought the video into Cassie's restaurant and asked her to please ask her brother to autograph the video for my friend Rich's birthday! I gave her my home address written on a Post-It note.

A few weeks passed. I then received a huge package, postmarked from Studio City, California, with my name and address in oversized letters. There was no return address on the package. Rich was amazed to receive an autographed copy of "Rainman," and I was feeling pretty good for surprising my friend!

The following video describes the highlights of the lifeguard tournaments at the Jersey shore each summer, while the Baywatch theme song plays in the background. My little brothers are both in this video! Alex is posing by the disco ball (at the start), competing in the Torp dash (about 3:02 video time), and entering the water with a huge paddleboard (about 2:08 video time)! Ian is also in this video too and has a huge smile on his face! All my friends are in this video; it's a delight to work with these dedicated guards every summer ... they are not only my friends but also my Heroes! Thanks for creating the video, Matt! (He's running down the beach, David Hasselhoff style, about 2:39! lol)
