What is feminism?

    Feminism encompasses many definitions as each feminist defines the word in their own way based on their own life experiences and worldview. The basic principle of feminism is to recognize and combat women‘s oppression, but many feminists broaden their focus to incorporate race, class, sexuality, etc. Different definitions of feminism can be found in numerous ideological branches that include socialist, Marxist, radical, liberal, black, lesbian, post-colonial and third-world, cultural, multiracial, libertarian, post-structural and post-modern, and ecofeminism.

    Feminism’s beginning cannot be traced back to a specific date or location as it organically formed in many different places at different times. Feminism is more than a collection of social theories.  It is also a political movement that consists of activism in the public sphere (i.e. political rallies, legislation) as well as in the private sphere (i.e. equal sharing of housework, freedom of expression).
