ACF Fall Tournament
University of Maryland-College Park
November 12, 2005
Team: Jason Keller, Bert Hartmann, Gary the Snail
Record: 10-2; Second Place
Tournament Winner: North Carolina
Summary
Things started a little bumpy. We lost to South Carolina A on a
packet with some really bad Hispanism tossups, and then had a
bye. Somehow, our packet was combined with Carnegie Mellon's, and
since we were both at the tournament, the packet wasn't read at
all. Instead, we got to hear a packet on which I probably would
have had one of my best rounds of the day, and included a meatball of a
tossup on Ruth Benedict, which had me spazzing out from the
lead-in. Things calmed down a bit. We met South Carolina B
soon after, and they mentioned that Emily had been at practices and we
introduced them to Bert. After another eh packet against North
Carolina, sailing was smooth, with a lot of clobberings and two close
matches against Virginia and Princeton going our way (aside: can we
stop with the tossups on "least squares?"). As a result, combined
with South Carolina B's upset of South Carolina A in the final round,
we ended up in second place on total points. That was really
cool, and then we went to celebrate my birthday (bonus!). The
questions were pretty good overall, and props go out to Bert for coming
along for the ride.
(n.b. Certain people with nothing better to do than hate on
a good portion of the circuit decided to mince the last statement and
interpret it as "Bert's a buzzer rocks!" when really,
thanks were intended for Bert for sacrificing his time to come to a
tournament so that the team would not consist of a single person.
This is supposed to be a team game, after all.)
