HISTORY

In the spring of 2002, a band (Red Electric) began rehearsing on Livingston Campus of Rutgers University. They practiced in different areas on Livingston, but were kicked out because they did not have a permit for the spaces they were practicing in. They became a band of nomadic musicians, moving from space to space, getting kicked out every once in a while, until they'd had enough. Something needed to be done. They came to the conclusion that they needed to start reserving space, but in order to reserve rooms they need to be associated with an organization on campus. The spring semester ended, and an idea began to root itself into the band's heads, for a way to provide rehearsal space, not only for themselves, but for other student musicians as well. Rutgers University does not provide a space for musicians unless they are in the Mason Gross School of the Arts. There was no organization at Rutgers for other musicians on campus, so one needed to be started.

In the fall of 2002, Ron Fleming, George Jarroush, Brandon Bedner, and Matt Jasper signed on for the Executive Board in order to form the new organization called the Rutgers University Musicians Guild (The Guild, or RUMG for

short). They did all the usual "getting to be an organization" stuff, and had their first meeting in early October, in Tillett Hall, the very building that they once had gotten kicked out of. They began planning for their first shows. The RUMG hosted an Open Mic MC hip hop show on November 26th, 2002, which was a success, having over 190 people attend. The next event of the fall semester, a Rock Show in Brew Ha Has on Douglass Campus was also a success, filling the room to near maximum capacity.

When the fall semester ended, some changes occurred on the Guild Executive Board. The Executive Officer, Ron Fleming, and the Artistic Director, George Jarroush, stepped down from their positions due to time commitments, and Matt Jasper took over Ron's position, with Nick Martino taking over George's, and Tom Slocum, already a E-board member, taking over Matt Jasper's previous position as Administrative Manager. Oh yeah, Brandon stayed as Treasurer too. The Guild strode forth in all of its majesty to return with more events and more outrageous schemes, the first of them being a Rock Show on February 15, 2003, in Yorba Lounge, on Livingston Campus.   Boris
