April 21, 2006 Yorba Show Review

+ (The Positive)

The inclusion of James Watts in the set made me ecstatic, mostly because he was a sort of un-known celebrity among the guild and the list serve. What a professional! He handled our "intimate" audience AND following Venereal Exchange with class and made sure everyone enjoyed his brief but excellent set. I think we'd all love to see the guild shows include more genres of music, especially hip-hop and rap. New Brunswick is a HOT BED for aspiring musicians spanning all genres. And as "metal" as we are, I think we can all agree that's a necessary consideration. Also, I think JW could be a resource for tapping into some of these up and coming musicians around Rutgers.

Of course, I was so thrilled to see the Queens' Corale side project. You did a great job, ladies! They were completely different from anything else that had happened that night, and provided gorgeous accapella to end the evening. Rutgers has a cluster of awesome accapella groups, and I really think this was the tightest sect of female accapella I've seen on campus.

Between the Queens Corale, Elizabeth, and Button, this was by far the largest representation of female muscians at a guild show that I've seen.

Which brings me to my next point:

- (The things that need changing)

As student musicians who promote the growth and existance of all forms of musical project on campus, we CANNOT continue to tolerate the things that happened last night. We CANNOT continue to approach rock, punk, metal or any other form of music as a boys' club. I've never in my life heard so much off the collar commentary about p-s, c-s, b c-s, and bjs as I did last night. Some of which was said directly to ME. This, gentleman, is completely unacceptable. It's so ironic that songs dedicated to "every girl in this room because you're all a bunch of f-g c-s" was allowed to go on during the show that had the most female musician representation, ever. And the FLYER - what the f? That wasn't something I wanted to be associated with. And perhaps this is why more flyers weren't put up around campus, and why this show was so poorly advertised.
