Master Cheng-Yen founded the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu-Chi Foundation with the help of five disciples and thirty devoted followers. From humble beginnings of personal effort and sacrifice Tzu Chi has grown to embrace over four million members worldwide
  Tzu Chi aspires through compassion and joyful giving to alleviate the suffering of the less fortunate, as well as those who have fallen on hard times. The organization seeks to carry out its primary missions of charity, medical assistance, and the promotion of education and culture in keeping with virtues of sincerity, integrity, honesty and truth.
  Tzu Chi established its U.S. chapter in 1985 and now has over forty thousand members in the United States. Tzu Ching ("Compassionate Youth"), the collegiate arm of Tzu Chi, has established itself in such diverse campuses as U.C. Berkeley, Stanford, N.Y.U, and now Rutgers.
